FIREWORKS ON THANKSGIVING?
Traditions
grow differently up here in the frozen north. Our Fourth of July
comes during the long daylight hours of the summer, when it just is not
dark enough to have a decent fireworks display. Here on the Kenai
Peninsula in South Central Alaska, we have our fireworks display on Thanksgiving,
because it's dark enough then to really be able to have a great display,
and sometimes nature cooperates with it's own wonderful display of Aurora
Borealis. The nights are cold enough, and dark enough that these Northern
Lights are just spectacular.
During the fireworks on Thanksgiving, Santa Claus makes his annual trip
to the Kenai Peninsula, arriving in a helicopter, much to the delight
of the children, bundled up in their snowsuits. The rest of the Thanksgiving
tradition in Alaska is the same as everywhere else; families will gather
and serve up the turkey and trimmings, and reflect on how much we really
have to be thankful for in this great country of ours.
There
are so many new Thanksgiving children's books this year. I
KNOW AN OLD LADY WHO SWALLOWED A PIE by
Alison Jackson and illustrated by Judith Byron
looks like it is really full of laughs as the madcap relative who
brings a pie to Thanksgiving dinner eats the whole thing before
she even gets in the door.

There
is a new Magic Tree House book called THANKSGIVING
ON THURSDAY by Mary Pope Osborne. Jack and Annie are
whisked back to the first Thanksgiving, where they meet Squanto
and the pilgrims.
