James Atlas brings the work of Paul Johnson, Christopher Hitchens and Michael Korda to
audio disc. Each author gives listeners a brief, but fascinating glimpse into a major
historical figure.
Paul Johnson retells the historical life of George Washington - a man tall in stature
and humble in accepting the first presidency. The author writes about his family, their
land interests, his marriage to a wealthy woman, the Revolutionary War, his presidency
and much more. This is more than a traditional biography into the life of man who took
part in creating a nation. It's an inspiring reminder of an era we hold dear in our hearts
and must remember as we continue prevent terrorism on our precious soil.
Christopher Hitchens retells the bold - and most recently scandalous - life of Thomas
Jefferson. From his political rivalry with another to historical moments such as the Lewis
and Clark expedition and the Louisiana purchase. Hitchens notes Jefferson's attraction to
women and his desire to represent America in Paris only to be upstaged by Ben Franklin,
of all people. And of course his relationship with a house slave.
Michael Korda retells the life of Ulysses S. Grant. Korda brings a historical life back
into the spotlight where it belongs. He begins with a scene of a barely dressed pop star
wanting to do a show in front of Grant's tomb; a tomb defaced with graffiti and trashed
in its surrounds. Korda tells of Grant's childhood, his engagement, the sacrifice his
family made for history, the Civil War and reconstruction and being President.
All three biographies are impressive, but Korda's on Grant was the most interesting
for me. Listeners will hear common historical tidbits along with some lesser-known facts.
All in all, a fascinating listen. In building our personal American dream we take for granted
or don't even realize the freedoms we do have. It takes biographies like these to remind
us of America's sacrifices and reignite our inner patriotism. All three biographies are
read by Sam Tsoutsouvas. A great narration befitting three great men.
