A Life That Matters
The Legacy of Terri Schaivo - A Lesson for Us All

by Mary and Robert Schindler, with Suzanne Schindler Vitadamo and Bobby Schindler
read by Don Leslie and Kate McIntyre

We all remember the story of Terri Schaivo. At least, we remember the part Michael Schaivo wanted us to hear. Now, Terri's parents come forward with the rest of the story, the part Michael Schaivo couldn't allow anyone to know before Terri's death. This is the part that makes me angry.

When Terri was a teenager, she put on weight, until she weighed close to two hundred pounds. Her parents took her to a doctor to find out what was wrong. The doctor told them that nothing was wrong with Terri. When she was ready to lose weight, she would tell them. She did, and was put on a weight-loss program that slowly brought the weight off until Terri regained her trim figure.

Of course, as Terri blossomed into a beautiful, slender young woman, she got the attentions of several young men. Among them was a quiet, intense young man who never revealed much about himself. His name was Michael Schaivo. Soon, he and Terri were married. At first, all went well and the couple seemed happy. They followed Mr. and Mrs. Schindler to Florida. After a time, they began to quarrel. Terri even told a friend she wanted a divorce.

If this is the case, how did Michael Schaivo wind up with the court-sanctioned ability to make medical decisions for Terri? The answer will both shock and anger you. The ease with which Schaivo, his lawyer and one judge managed to manipulate the justice system for their own gain is both frightening and appalling. Why didn't the Schindlers tell this story before their daughter died an unnecessary death? Listen to A Life That Matters. Then, join the Schindlers in making sure it never happens again.
