Broken:
My Story of Addiction and Redemption

by William Cope Moyers with Katherine Ketcham

In Broken: My Story of Addiction and Redemption, William Cope Moyers shares openly and candidly about his struggle with addiction to drugs and alcohol.

He was just a child when he began feeling uncomfortable in his own skin, and experiencing an unidentifiable emptiness inside.

He began smoking marijuana in high school and began drinking liquor upon entering college. In his junior year of college he was introduced to the "hard" drugs, such as, LSD and Cocaine.

By twenty, he didn't know the difference between what was normal and what wasn't. He drank and drugged not to feel better but to feel normal. "Want" became "need", truth, honor, integrity, and decency ceased to matter. All that mattered was the drug.

The causes of addiction ran deeper and were more insidious than simple right and wrong, or making bad choices. Coming from a "good" family didn't protect him from this disease.

As his drug use escalated his life began to spiral out-of-control. His first marriage failed and it was while in treatment at Hazelden that he met his second wife, Allison.

After three years of sobriety he relapsed again, abandoning his wife, small children and a promising career at CNN. His family once again rescued him from a crack house in Atlanta.

It took four times to rehab but he was finally able to overcome his addiction to crack cocaine and now he is Vice President for External Affairs at Hazelden Foundation in Minnesota.

William Cope Moyers gives hope to many others who suffer from this cunning and baffling disease of addiction. He does an outstanding job of sharing his story. I applaud his efforts to bring more understanding to the disease of addiction and help people to overcome the stigma associated with it. Addiction is a bad disease that affects good people. Even coming from a good and loving home does not protect you from this disease and mere will power is not enough to overcome it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires a better understanding of drug addiction. Nicely done!
