anyone seeking to recover from a less than perfect childhood.
Marion's father was mentally ill with a condition called schizophrenia with catatonia - incurable in the
1930's. She was just a child when her father was institutionalized. Her mother also suffered from numerous
health conditions, including a bad heart.
Because of her sadness and disappointment, she pushed her feelings into an inside dark place. She tried not
to care when other kids ran out in the street to buy ice cream when the peddler came around.
During her formative years, she felt ashamed, scared and lonely, inferior and helpless, someone to be pushed
aside, not deserving of so much as an ice-cream cone for dessert.
Marion married John Duckworth, and they became missionaries in the Pacific Northwest. After eleven years of
ministry, John began experiencing health problems and was forced to resign. This set Marion afloat, and she felt
her identity had disappeared. She found herself standing naked on God's doorstep - reduced to an ordinary
Christian without a place and a purpose. But it's during this time she found herself blindsided by God's love.
She had lived to middle age and spent a decade in ministry before she found out who she really was - that
only the God who created her had the right to define her identity.
It was God the creator who had painted the full-color illustrations into her plain book of days. Baby step by
baby step, she made her way up the hill, trusting God despite her feelings. In Naked on God's Doorstep,
Marion Duckworth teaches us how to do the same.
