Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins
The Autobiography

by Rupert Everett

In his memoir Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins, Everett spends a lot of time talking about his gay lifestyle. Not that there’s anything wrong with it. He also provides descriptions of his drug and alcohol use, early prostitution, thefts, freeloading, practical jokes, and assorted other bad behavior. Many would argue that there is something wrong with these. But just when you think he’s a total cad without any redeeming features - apart from his fine acting and lively writing style - he surprises you with his intellectual depth, feelings of remorse, and acts of benevolence.

Everett’s book explores what goes on behind stage and on a movie set, while giving equal time and importance to what goes on in dark alleys and inside the local pub. His memoir is a series of clever anecdotes that discusses the people, parties, and politics (within the film industry) that have entered his life so far. He shares stories about working with Madonna, Julia Roberts, Sharon Stone and other notable actresses, actors, and directors throughout his long film and stage career.

Just as his personal character has its ups and downs, his writing style fluctuates between learned references to great literary figures and crude assemblages of four-letter words. You never know from one chapter to the next -or for that matter, one paragraph to the next- exactly what to expect. Throughout his triumphs and scandals, and everything in between, Everett comes across as completely genuine and frailly human.
