Slow Cooker Cooking
By Lora Brody
“Slow cookers
are synonymous to one-pot meals.”
Lora
Brody is the author of twenty-three cookbooks. It should be no surprise
that she’s finally come up with a cookbook for slow cookers.
Brody is a self confessed slow cooker addict - and she’s not
alone. There are groups of us, those who want time for other things,
but not at the expense of a hearty family meal. Brody first gives
readers the slow cooker basics and tells us which ones she prefers.
She also mentions each recipe was tested using the “Rival”
crock-pot. She gives fair warning that different brands cook at
different temperatures. Throughout the book, Brody shares her thoughts
about the recipes -- where she got them, etc. Brody includes pantry
recipes that become key ingredients to other dishes -chicken and
vegetable stock, caramelized onions, chestnuts, golden tomato sauce
rosemary infused oil. The various recipes offer something for everyone,
even the hunter (pheasant, venison, duck and rabbit). The chapters
listed are typical: Appetizers, Soups, Vegetables and Sides, Meat,
Poultry, Fish, Pasta, Breads, and Grains, Desserts. The recipes
are anything but typical. Most are gourmet in taste -- the poultry
chapter being mostly Duck. However there are some basic recipes
for those with limited ingredients in their cupboards. To get the
most out of this one, I recommend sharing it with the extended family.
