Reunion Cookbook is the second cookbook generated from the fictional towns of Moose County, "400 miles north of everywhere," the setting of the mysteries by Lilian Jackson Braun. This one brings together the food from eight favorite Moose County families, plus a special section for a cat reunion. Arranged by family, each section begins with an invitation and then offers selections from some of Braun’s books. Recipes follow, including beverages, breads, salads and sides, meats and accompaniments, and desserts. There are sumptuous recipes for Peanut Butter Pie and Brunswick Stew. There’s even a Watermelon Rind Pickle recipe. But most of all, there are recipes about foods we have all read about: the Paul Bunyan Burger, Grandma Brodie’s Leeks and Ham, Koko’s Cocoa, Grandma Gage’s Washboard Cookies, and Arch’s Memorable Stuffed Cabbage. Personally, I’ve longed for a taste of Moose County, and now I can have it any day of the week. Having read nearly all of Braun’s Cat Who... books, I found the quotes to be gentle reminders of the good times I’ve had with her books. Unfortunately, the quotations didn’t always mention the foods they were placed near nor the people who had produced the food in the books. That touch would have added a special touch for people who hadn’t read all of the books. The recipes, by the way, are sound and produce some of the best comfort foods I’ve ever tasted.
