Bound
for Canaan
The Underground Railroad and the War for the Soul of America

Fergus Bordewich
Read by Fergus Bordewich
In
Bound for Canaan, Bordewich strives to enlighten history
readers even more about Underground Railroad. Bordewich reminds
us that the Underground Railroad was a dangerous cause. Fear kept
many silent, hence the limited history of the Railroad and those
involved. Bordewich presents the Underground Railroad as the nation's
first civil rights movement and he talks in length about the lesser-known
heroes of this movement. People like Levi Coffin, a man dedicated
to fighting an inhumane practice he felt was against God and Gerrit
Smith, a wealthy man who used his money to maintain the movement.
There are many others (George DeBaptiste, Jermain Loguen) who sacrificed
much to free those forced into the shackled life of slavery. It's
a gripping listen. Meticulous research and fascinating facts presented
by an influential intellect are why this audio book promises to
evoke discussion. I'm not familiar with the work of Fergus Bordewich,
but after listening to Bound for Canaan," I will be looking
for more of his work.
