The Double Exodus Theory

by Steve Brock

Steve Brock has presented an intriguing supposition in The Double Exodus Theory.

This scholarly work delves into an exploration of ancient biblical texts, often comparing different versions line by line and passage by passage. His research offers a glimpse into the commonly-held view of many biblical scholars that many hands helped form the written version of the Old Testament. He compares and contrasts the writings of Levite priests who uplift Moses and the Aaronic priests who place Aaron, Moses' brother, as the head of the priestly class and the only sanctioned group to conduct organized worship. These early scriptures provide the underpinnings for Brock's controversial theory that there were two exoduses involving Semitic peoples of the Bible. He contends that early Semitic traders grew in power and became the Hyksos pharaohs of the 14th and 15th Dynasties and later the 18th Dynasty pharaoh Akhenaten. Each of these eras experienced an exodus. The Hyskos exodus was an expulsion, a turning out of the old rulers, and has some archaeological suggestion for the plagues reported by Moses in the book of Exodus. The Atenist exodus was really a flight to escape Egypt. Both exoduses ended in Canaan.

Brock's theories are controversial and complicated. He offers charts and cites evidence from other researchers. His speculation that the Atenist movement was really an Egyptian veiling of Semitic monotheism is intriguing. He also suggests that Joseph was Ahkenaten's grandfather. It is implied that since Ahkenaten's mummy has never been found that perhaps he really fled to Canaan and wandered in the wilderness with the children of Israel.

The Double Exodus Theory is not easy reading, but it is intriguing. For any armchair archaeologist or biblical scholar, this book offers infinite possibilities.
