"True
patriotism springs from a belief in the dignity of the individual,
freedom
and equality not only for Americans but for all people on earth."
-
Eleanor Roosevelt
You don't have
to be America's #1 patriot to enjoy The Pocket Book of Patriotism.
This understated little hardcover is stuffed with a table of American
and World history Americans should already know, but unfortunately
some do not. I found the contents truly immeasurable -- a definite
contender in the reference category.
The book is
set up in two parts. Part 1 is "Timeline of American and World History."
The timeline begins at 30,000-20,000 BC and ends with Pope John
Paul II's passing in 2005. Included, in red text, are various memorable
and/or historical quotes. The years are set up in columns, showing
the world's and America's most historical moments simultaneously.
These moments range from famous books and music to court judgments,
memorable incidents like the Klondike Gold Rush, military events,
etc. It's interesting to see the similarities and differences between
America and the world.
Part 2 is "Patriotic
Texts & Essentials." Here readers will find copies of famous speeches,
charters and documents as well as songs, poems, a list of the presidents,
the states in the order they joined the union, well-known quotes
about patriotism, a section on the Medals of Valor, a section on
flag traditions and etiquette, and ending with well-known oaths
and pledges.
This is a wonderful
reminder of our history, our passion, and the freedom we desire.
