If you want to know who the Ghibelines were, or when the mediaeval laws concerning witchcraft were laid down or the development of Romanesque architectural styles then this is your book.  Profusely illustrated in color it tells the reader briefly and succinctly what they want to know.  If you want to know in detail about any of these topics then you will need to go elsewhere but having this book as a source of reference will equip even the least knowledgeable person with enough basic facts to enable them to search for more detailed information.

Covering the period from the Fall of Rome up to the beginning of the Renaissance this reference book contains 600 entries and 20 longer articles on most notable people, events, customs, fashions, wars and religious matters pertaining to the Old World, with selected references to Africa, the Americas and the Far East.

Anybody who enjoys reading historical novels, or is writing one, or who is on a course studying the Middle Ages will find this a highly useful tool that will be consulted time and time again.  My own copy is already starting to look very dog-eared as I research my novel – an indispensable and user-friendly resource.
