Martie Rhodes is concerned
about her friend, Susan. Susan lives alone, her marriage destroyed by
a strange phobia that has made her a prisoner in her own apartment. This
once vibrant woman is only a sad shadow of the person she once was, and
Martie is the only one who can coax her out of her self-made imprisonment
long enough to visit the office of a therapist who may hold the key to
her confused existence. After a trip to the doctor, Susan tells her that
she knows someone has been coming into her apartment at night - but she
can't remember who it is or what they do to her during their nocturnal
visits. Is this just another delusion, or is there someone out there who
is invading Susan's life? Before Martie can help Susan try to put the
pieces of her shattered life together, she begins to experience problems
of her own. She is having strange panic attacks. Bizarre thoughts assault
her without warning - urging her to kill. After Susan commits suicide,
Martie must face her own mounting sense of terror. Visions of murdering
her husband, Dusty, paralyze her - and Dusty must find a way to rescue
not only his wife, but also his brother, who seems to be suffering from
his own growing psychotic episodes. As his sense of danger increases,
Dusty seeks to understand what is happening - before it's too late.
Dean Koontz presents
us with a disturbing but intriguing tale of madness and deception. This
is a book you will have a hard time putting down - well written and taut
with suspense. Frightening, fascinating - Koontz at his very best.
