Jon Stofferson is a cop who seems to be losing himself. His partner, Sarah Nash, has watched him change into someone she barely knows - and she doesn't like what she sees. Life on the streets strains the lines of right and wrong - and those sworn to protect and defend eventually end up writing their own code of justice. But Jon's code is changing into something Sarah can't understand. She seeks revenge for innocent victims - but he seems more concerned about protecting the rights of the criminals, no matter how foul and malevolent their deeds. Street gangs are exacting their own brand of twisted retribution and several particularly heinous crimes throw the partners into a whirlwind of evil.

But it isn't the crimes themselves that have Jon Stofferson fearing for his own sanity - it is a series of episodes that leave him in strange motel rooms with no memory of where he's been or what he's done. Voices rant in his head - screaming for justice, but he doesn't know what that really means anymore. Fearing that he is losing his mind, he seeks help from a psychiatrist. Anna Goldstein struggles to help him - but his problems seem to lie beyond the realm of psychiatry. An unseen force is slaughtering criminals who have beaten the system. An invisible birdlike creature is exacting retribution - and Jon Stofferson may be the link to its fury. Jon's aunt, his partner, and Anna, who has fallen in love with him, turn to Momma Pepper, a Voodoo High Priestess, in a final attempt to save Jon from the evil that is trying to steal his soul.

Richard E. Gill has written an intense, intricate, and exceptionally frightening novel that will pull you into a world of shadows and nightmares. PRIMAL JUSTICE is well-written and compelling. Although this is a lengthy novel, it rarely drags. Be warned that it is explicit and not everyone's "cup of tea," but Mr. Gill is a writer to be reckoned with. I have little doubt that we will hear more from him in the future. But not too soon, I hope. It will take a while before my heart starts beating normally and I quit looking behind me...
