Many Bloody Returns
Tales of Birthdays with Bite
Edited by Charlaine Harris and Toni L. P. Kelner
I’ll be the first to admit, it would have been hard for this book to fail with me. I love vampires. I love
anthologies. And the book has some of my all-time favorite authors inside: Jim Butcher, Christopher Golden,
Tanya Huff, and Elaine Viets. I opened it with almost giddy anticipation, and it never disappointed. One of
the great things about anthologies is that there are always some tasty stories to enjoy, even if a few taste
a bit flat, though with Many Bloody Returns, each story was a new and pleasurable adventure.
As a huge fan of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files, I was especially delighted to read the birthday
adventure with Harry Dresden and his vampire brother, Thomas - fast-paced, exciting and just plain fun.
This anthology brought some unique twists on the vampire story, as I read about vampires who have to kill
once a year to survive, vampires who are really more akin to were-birds, vampires made by magic instead of
biting, vampire detectives, and even odder creatures including death (she’s not who you thought), a Norwegian
demon, and several witches and wizards. I was amazed to see the wide variety of stories born from mixing
vampires and birthdays - and all of them fascinating. I would recommend this collection for anyone looking for
a good book to curl up with. It’s delightful. |
