There are some practical books that have you rushing around, gathering materials and itching to start work. This is a lively celebration of mosaics in particular and color in general, awash in the large scale lush photography that is characteristic of Kaffe Fassett. Although this book does tend towards the larger, more ambitious (yet not difficult) projects, there are also quite a few smaller pieces. Cover an old lamp base with beads, give a new lease on life to an old planter or even have a go at the garden wall. I particularly enjoyed the emphasis on recycling existing items like broken crockery, old necklaces, shells and odd bathroom tiles, then using it to decorate junkshop furniture and inexpensive garden ware.

You can happily drown in this sea of colors - check out the inspirational chapters at the front of the book and see what people have done with collections of corks, memorabilia, marbles and buttons to customize their cars and homes. There are plenty of projects, many of which are inexpensive to do and make a bold splash for remarkably little outlay. This is a worthwhile purchase that is both practical primer and coffee table extravaganza.
