Weaving has fascinated me ever since, as a small child, I made my own "loom" out of an old picture frame. This book rekindles that first feeling of excitement as I saw a piece of fabric (in my case, an Alice band) appearing and for once in a how-to book shows how you can take up a craft with a minimum of outlay - a feature that has me cheering.

The author takes the would-be weaver from the early stages (buying a loom/frame or adapting an old picture frame) through selecting threads and embellishments and learning the terminology. There are lots of ideas for pictures to weave ranging from simple pictures to abstracts and diagrams showing how to draw up a plan for the work. There are ideas for finishing the warp ends and a section on mounting work, plus the inevitable gallery of larger-scale works to inspire the more advanced worker. These are really aimed at those who have invested in a loom and, for my tastes, takes up too much space of what appears to be, for the most part, a book aimed at the old picture frame end of the craft rather than the loom-and-studio brigade. This creates a split in what is, otherwise, an excellent basic primer.
