Dr. Whitely is a practicing doctor of veterinary medicine, in the field of animal health for over thirty years. She has held many different positions and written columns about pets, their health and their behavior for such publications as The Saturday Evening Post and Woman's World.

Dr. Whitely has drawn from this vast wealth of experience to write a wonderful book on kittens and the creatures they invariably turn into, full grown cats. Cats are often an overlooked breed in the veterinary field. At one time, Dr. Whitely was the only vet in her locality who offered house calls for cats. In Dr. Whitely's opinion, cats are smarter than dogs, more independent and self-contained, with a much longer memory. She is also of the opinions that most people either love cats or hate them.

In the first section of the book, the author helps the reader decide if a cat is right for them, then walks through the considerations of how to select the right cat for your home and family situation. As the book advances, the reader learns why cats have some of the behaviors they do and how to modify them. In later chapters, she deals with cat illness and ways to treat some of the more simple ailments at home.

This book is very well-written and in such a way that even the person who has never owned a cat could understand them. I am an animal lover, but have always had canines and never tried to mix the two. This book will be much appreciated by a new cat owner, a person contemplating acquiring a cat or a long time feline lover.
