Embossed Greetings Cards
By Carol Wallis

Brass and plastic embossing stencils are everywhere these days, and I confess they were something of a mystery to me until I read a magazine article on how to use them. This book takes that mystery away and reveals their potential for card making (they do have other uses it is true, but look elsewhere for that) and shows that they are actually rather easy to use and certainly give a neat, professional look to a card.

The equipment section shows a somewhat awesome array of tools, many of which you don’t need (and I, a professional crafter, don’t own), so any potential buyers are advised to read carefully through the book before splashing out. When you get down to the projects, they are handsomely showcased, and the instructions as ever with this series and Search Press in general are crystal clear. It is soon evident that a minimum of materials and tools can produce an impressive looking piece of work, and there are some nice ideas in here. Learn how to make a cat shape look furry, lines look three-dimensional, and what to do with metal sheets and vellum when you want a change from thin card. Equipment lists notwithstanding, this primer does show you how to do a lot with a little, and provided you purchase a light box and some chalks, you will be home free as regards specialist gear. I didn’t know much about stenciling before I opened this book, and now I do - so thumbs up for a useful text.
