Greetings Cards
By Dorothy
Wood
Using
aperture cards as a mount for cross-stitched work dates back to
the earliest days of the current vogue for making one’s own
greetings cards, and it must still be one of the most popular methods.
Take it a stage further with this book, which explores some uses
for freestyle stitches to make modern and interesting cards.
You don’t
need to have any previous skill in embroidery to use this book,
which counts in its favor; the staged photographs take you through
the stages of each stitch, as well as every step of the project.
Have a go at appliqué, ribbon embroidery, stitching-on card,
working with felt, and incorporating decorative buttons. Use standard
floss or some of the other more exciting alternatives to make your
mark. One of my favorite things about this book is how it puts some
very modern methods through their paces in some contemporary designs
that are sure to appeal to a wide age range. Nothing used in this
book costs much money, either, and many items are used that could
be bought in non-specialist shops or even market stalls. To its
detriment, there aren’t many projects explained in full, and
the lovely galleries appear without any patterns at all--daunting
for a beginner to copy. But to anybody with some experience behind
them and some imagination, the staged projects give an excellent
grounding in the skills needed to complete all sorts of more advanced
work. If you think that embroidery is too difficult or old-fashioned,
then a glance at this modern primer ought to dispel any such fears.
A feast of food for thought!
