Chinese Designs
Design Source Book, 12

by Elaine Hill

Chinese designs have been popular in the West for a long time now, and William Morris and Liberty both drew on them frequently for inspiration. Now you can too, and you have not only a book (#12 in the Design Source Library) but also a CD to choose from. Both have the same content, but in a different format. Trace them, use them as inspiration or scan them into your computer - or simply let your computer do the hard work for you.

The disk contains .tif image files (300 dpi), which are compatible with many graphics programs, and an index of PDF thumbnails for browsing in your Acrobat Reader before you make your mind up. You are free to use up to 15 of the designs for your personal use, or sell the items you make for charity but these are not public domain so no commercial use is permitted. The designs themselves owe a great deal to the works of Morris and Liberty, and have the look of Eastern art seen through a Western filter. Swirling vegetation, flowers, lovely Geishas and a Buddha all feature, as do various animals, masks, butterflies, fish and Japanese mons. Most of the pictures are large and fairly detailed, but as the author suggests, why not adapt them or use just an element of a design? Lovely for textile work.
