This is a very small book with a very large impact. How many children in the world are in the same category as Adam, systematically grouped as an underachiever, and as a result of the treatment they receive from adults, the arbitrary classification becomes a reality? We all know it happens. The story that is related in this book makes one want to become involved, and do something for all the little disadvantaged and underachievers in the world.

Adam was pushed to the side by a system that was supposed to help him, shuffled from one foster home to another, and denied loving parents. He didn't achieve much of anything until a perceptive and caring foster mother became determined to give him a meaningful life. It's the story of a miracle performed by one mom who gave unconditional love to a child and turned around his ability to learn and his own self-worth. The first part of this book is told from the mother's point of view, and the last section from Adam's.

I highly recommend Saving Adam. It will put your emotions through a wringer. Anyone who works as an educator or caseworker should be assigned this book as part of an ongoing education. They may be able to see a different way to help children in need of love and a more caring system.
