Would You Rather Be the Pigeon or the Statue?
By Freda Gower Ward
In
her new book, humorist Freda Gower Ward asks the question, “Would
You Rather Be the Pigeon or the Statue?” She explains the
meaning behind the title in her introduction: “Come visit
with me as I reflect on seventy years and how we fit in as the pigeon,
who thinks he’s always right and unloads on others, the statue,
on which the pigeon unloads—or both at the same time.”
During
some periods in our lives, we may actually feel like the pigeon.
However, most of the time I’m afraid we are just the hapless
statue who winds up “dumped on” (sorry, just couldn’t
pass it up) by the circumstances of day-to-day existence.
In Would
You Rather Be the Pigeon or the Statue? Freda talks about school
teachers who get younger as we grow older, what it’s like
to be thirteen for three years, the truth behind the discovery of
gravity (this is something women figured out long before Isaac Newton
had his sudden “revelation”), and many of the other
so-called “mysteries of life.” Freda can find humor
in anything, including wrinkles, toilet seats, pop-top cans, weight,
and husbands. She helps us to laugh at ourselves as we struggle
to break out of the role of “statue” and dare to fly
high with the pigeons. (Wait a minute. That doesn’t sound
quite right!)
Freda
Gower Ward is one of the most inspirational and downright hysterical
writers around. I guarantee you that after you read one of her books
you’ll be hooked for good.
