Giver of Gifts
Three Stories of Christmas Grace
by Jerry Camery-Hoggatt
Here is a slim volume to warm the heart at Christmas and remind busy, jaded readers what the holiday season is
really all about. If you have read my
review of
When Mother Was Eleven Foot Four, you will already be
au fait with one of the three stories in this collection, or rather the junior version of it. In here you can
read what really happens one Christmas in 1963, when the author’s mother can no longer afford a 12’ tree, and
her children discover the pleasure of gift giving and evoking the true magic of the season.
Discover, too, Joseph’s first moments alone with his precious child, and how an unusual artefact transforms
a sullen young girl and shows her how to be the best she can be. All three stories are the type that make the
reader think afterwards, and that stay pleasantly in the mind as an antidote to the more negative stories we
read in newspapers. Mr Hoggatt has a true storyteller style and the talent to look at the ordinary and make it
seem extraordinary, rather like his special mirror. This is one of those books destined to get taken out every
December and read in some quiet spot, while the reader takes some time out to reflect what all the turkey,
stuffing, and gift wrapping is really all about. |
