Swashbuckling Faith
Exploring for Treasure With Pirates of the Caribbean

by Tim Wesemann

Tim Wesemann, in his book Swashbuckling Faith, employs a novel twist to get at his messages concerning the love of Jesus for his people -Wesemann takes various points in the plot of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean and comes up with parallel messages found in the Scriptures.

In the chapter "One Good Deed Deserves..." Jack saves Elizabeth’s life, but the act was not deemed good enough to save a man from a lifetime of wickedness. Wesemann parallels it to the one act of Jesus dying on the cross for our sins.

Chapter after chapter contains these connections between the actions of Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner, and those of Jesus when he sacrificed for us.

The points are made in sequential order as the plots unfolds, and the reader soon becomes accustomed to receiving some relevant points from the Bible as they were evoked to Wesemann as he tells the story.

Wesemann has his moments when he injects humor into his lessons. When David defeated Goliath, Wesemann said "The people danced and cheered, ‘David, David, he’s our man, if he can’t do it nobody can!’ No, wait -that’s the chant of the JBA (Jerusalem Basketball Association cheerleaders."

The chapters are short and easy to understand, and the points could have been (and have been) made before without the scenes from the movie, but somehow it adds to the message. It’s as if Wesemann is telling us to look for the love of Christ in activities of our daily life.
