The Song of Puerto Rico
By Nancy
Hooper
Illustrated by Raymond Betancourt
Translation: Jacqueline Quinones
What a deal! Two books in one.
Maybe even three.
Book
One is a delightful children's story by Nancy Hooper about a Puerto
Rican tree frog the size of one's thumbnail whose size is far less
important than his voice. Book Two: the translation by Jacqueline
Quinones will introduce an English-speaking child to Spanish (or
the whole process could be reversed, a Spanish-speaking child might
see the parallels between her native language and English.) Book
Three: a delightful book that makes learning Spanish fun for English-speaking
adults (or, again, the other way around!)
The
illustrations by Raymond Betancourt are a delight, as well. I learned
lots about the Puerto Rican culture. Do you know what clavos are?
Or a cuatro? (No, it's not the number four. That's spelled differently.)
This
is a book that will entertain youngsters and parents a like.
