The
Mouse, the Cat, and Grandmother's Hat
By Nancy
Willard
Illustrated by Jenny Mattheson
This
rhyming story with sing-song verse reminiscent of This Is the
House That Jack Built, is great fun to read. A mouse finds his
way under Grandmother's Birthday hat, and when the cat spies him,
the action gets hectic. The mouse races across the floor with the
cat in hot pursuit, causing the cake to topple to the floor, promptly
pick itself up and roll out the door. Nancy Willard has brought
her great imagination and sense of ridiculous humor to this lively
story.
Jenny
Mattheson was the perfect choice for illustrating this beautiful
book. She used oil on canvas to bring these illustrations to life,
with a soft, pastel-like color palette and a Victorian feel.
This
book will be a wonderful addition to the read-aloud library, to
be shared by the whole family.
