The Grim Grotto
A Series
of Unfortunate Events, No. 11
By Lemony Snicket
Read by Tim Curry
The Baudelaires
journey this time is to the cold, dark Grim Grotto. The Baudelaire
orphans meet up with a submarine captain and his daughter. The captain
has a humorous though sometimes annoying way of chattering on and
on. He tells them about the Sugar Bowl, but refuses to tell them
its importance. He fears they will be caught and forced to share
the secret. In the grotto, they find a Poisonous fungus (mushrooms)
and someone becomes deadly ill. It’s a trip that the Baudelaires
consider the lousiest of the lousy.
Readers will enjoy
the eleventh event in Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events.
The Baudelaire orphans’ adventure will keep listeners’
interests, even though the occasional lessons on the travels of
water, secret codes, word choices, etc., etc. sometimes seem tedious
to older listeners. Tedious though they are Snicket knows what he
is doing. Where else can a child learn something without really
noticing it than in an adventure with unfortunate children, odd
companions and unusual foes?
Tim Curry
narrates “The Grim Grotto.” The British actor adds various
inflections to each character, making each one distinguishable.
The captain’s pirate-like meanderings will have the kids giggling.
It’s an adventure for the whole family, so turn the volume
up.
