Mama
By Kelly Jones
Illustrated by Ken Kewley

Mama is a heartwarming story of family love as told through the eyes of a big sister. She introduces the reader to her baby brother who can only say one word, “Mama”. The big sister explains various situations in her day when she can interpret what her brother is trying to say.

The plot is realistic and well executed. However, the highly stylized collage illustrations don’t always complement the text. Characters don’t look consistent throughout the illustrations. While there is a vast array of bold colors in each picture, which children will like, the characters and actions depicted are not always easy to distinguish.

Overall, the story is strong enough to merit sharing. Mama is sure to be a hit with proud older siblings or children who are about to have a new baby in the family. Mama proves that the only language a family needs to speak is the language of love.
