Millions
By Frank Cottrell Boyce

Read by Simon Jones

Millions is the story of the Cunningham brothers, Damian and Anthony. It is also a story of greed and its consequences. Written for children between the ages of nine and twelve, it is a story with a well-disguised moral.

Damian and his brother have just moved to a new house with their dad. Their mother died not long before, which is what prompted the move. Damian wants to be very good in school, excellent in fact. So, he does a lot of research on the Internet about saints. In fact, he learns too much about them. That's why he built a hermitage near the railroad tracks out of cardboard boxes. He began to stuff holly branches into his shirt to "mortify" his flesh. He also recited a great deal about the saints in class. The whole thing got him into trouble.

One day, when he was at the hermitage, a bag came flying out of the sky and landed near him. It was stuffed with twenty-pound notes. Damian ran home and told his brother about the money. He and Anthony took it home. However, there was a problem. It was only seventeen days until Great Britain converted to the euro, so they didn't have long to spend it. Then they found they had another problem. The crooks who had stolen the money in the first place wanted it back. They had to get rid of it, and get rid of it fast.

It didn't take long for the boys to figure out that they couldn't spend it fast enough. There weren't that many things they really wanted. Damian tried giving it away, but that was a disaster.

How the boys got rid of the money and learned that money isn't everything is a comedy of errors sure to please. Pick up a copy of Millions and listen to Simon Jones tell a story you won't soon forget.
