Nothing But the Truth
A Documentary Novel
By Avi

The pure and simple truth is rarely pure and never simple. Oscar Wilde

Philip Malloy is a freshman at Harrison High whose fondest aspiration is to make the track team. His training leaves little time and energy for schoolwork--which he doesn't think matters, until a poor English grade keeps him from the team. He's desperate to find a way other than asking for extra work to bring his grade up.

Margaret Narwin has been a dedicated teacher for more than twenty years. She lives to expose students to the joys of literature. She also accepts the responsibility of teaching her students the importance of following rules.

In Nothing But the Truth, Philip hopes to get away from the teacher he views as his nemesis by breaking a rule. Things quickly spiral out of control until the whole country is taking sides in the subsequent controversy.

The most dangerous untruths are truths slightly distorted - G. C. Lichtenberg

Avi uses memos, transcripts of conversations, and newspaper articles to tell the story in a concise, factual manner. The study guide following the text urges readers to consider the contents during their attempt to find the truth. Well-written and thought provoking, Nothing But the Truth illustrates the possible, far-reaching consequences wrought by failing to accept responsibility. It will also encourage young readers to examine their own values. Definitely a must read!
