Bitsy & the Mystery at Amelia Island

by Vonda Skinner Skelton

Bitsy & the Mystery at Amelia Island is a charming "amateur sleuth" tale for children - similar to David Adler's Cam Jansen series or Betsy Byers' Herculeah Jones series, but with a strong Christian flavor. Bitsy tries to take the high road, even quoting Bible verses to live by but her impetuous nature sometimes gets the best of her. In Bitsy & the Mystery at Amelia Island, the young sleuth tackles possible ghosts, witches, and things that go bump in the night while learning how to get along with difficult people. Bitsy's spending the week with friends and trying to make enough money for a trip to summer camp - she's got plenty of schemes up her sleeve, from selling jewelry to winning a local talent show. But the course of Bitsy's life never runs smooth and she must deal with bullies and burglars before she's through. There's a definite bit of moral growth mixed into the mystery but the book manages to be fun instead of preachy. Bitsy is a great character, filled with passion and creativity, and the mystery combines just the right amount of tension with clear clues to help the reader solve the mystery along with Bitsy. The author plays totally fair - giving the reader the same clues that Bitsy puts together to find the solution. Definitely a great read for any mystery loving kid.
