Book of War
Diadem Worlds of Magic
by John Peel
Diadem Worlds of Magic is a series which focuses on a group of young magic-handlers from
different worlds that have been brought together in a variety of adventures. In Book of
War (the seventh in the series), the adventure centers on the warrior Helaine and her
troubled family, the house of Lord Votrin. It seems Votrin's castle is under siege and
without hope - so the young magic-handlers rush in to help. What ensues is both funny and
adventurous, with a dash of romance. All in all, a very satisfying novel. The author,
John Peel, is certainly skilled at keeping a complicated plot on task and moving forward
without either logic flaws or loose ends. The dialogue is, at times, a bit too perfect
with each character milking every possible laugh. It's the kind of dialogue that works
perfectly in a movie with a talented actor giving it just enough depth to make it believable,
but it comes across a bit too glib on the page at times. Still, a few "oh, please" moments
were not enough to spoil a truly enjoyable novel - the characters are charming and at the
end of the story, you'll wish for another visit with them. What more could you ask from
a series book? |
