The Bubblegum Babes' Guide to Sixth Grade
First in a series
by Doreen Lewis
Illustrated by Vin Labassi
Doreen Lewis, the author of The
Bubblegum Babes' Guide to Sixth Grade, has launched a new series
of books for girls. The Bubblegum Babes are four very different
preteens. Sara is outspoken and a true individualist. Meg is vivacious,
bossy, and well-to-do. Emily is delicate and comes from a family
that is struggling with money problems. Kelly, is sensible and smart.
They have all been friends for years and are now embarking on a
brand new adventure: middle school. In The Bubblegum Babes' Guide
to Sixth Grade, readers follow the girls through the ins and
outs of making their way through a new school and new social status:
exchanging classes, discovering boys, and finding out how to handle
"Aunt Flo" (having periods). We find out things about some of the
Babes that aren't very nice; for example, Meg becomes really snooty
about what her parents can buy her and she almost loses touch with
the Babe when she gets involved with the cheerleading crowd.
We also find out what preteens really think of their parents-oh, horrors! Seriously,
the Babes are both embarrassed by their parents and sometimes realize that moms can give
good advice, but it sort of has to be indirectly stated.
Inspired by Lewis's own children, their cousins, and their friends, The Bubblegum
Babes' Guide to Sixth Grade is a great look into those awkward tween years. Readers
who are this particular age will be able to relate to the Babes and the problems they
are dealing with. Unlike some of the other new tween series, The Bubblegum Babes'
Guide to Sixth Grade doesn't let gossip drive the plot of this story, nor does it
revolve around one socio-economic group. To be honest, when I first started reading
about the cheerleading tryouts early in the book, I wondered how many girls this would
relate to. But the story that unfolded was not what I expected and became a lesson on
what makes a lasting friendship.
I applaud Doreen Lewis for creating real preteens who are human with an occasional
social wart or two. I think the books in this series will help many young girls discover
what it takes to be a friend and how other girls deal with many of the anxieties of this
age. I wonder how the Babes will mature as they are portrayed in later books. I know that
young readers will enjoy coming to know these characters over time. As a parent, I enjoyed
my visits with them. |
