Dancing Matilda
by Sarah Hager
Illustrated by Kelly Murphy
Matilda is a kangaroo in motion. She dances in the morning, noon, and night. She doesn't
need music because she's dancing to her own drummer - the one in her head. It's clear
that not everyone enjoys Matilda's dancing as much as she does, but she's not one to let
that slow her down. Matilda dances for herself. Kelly Murphy's illustrations for this
very active book are charming - I loved seeing the Kookaburra in the bedroom window and
the Koala stuffie on the bed on the first page. Her spotted bloomers and charming pink
bow were also nice touches and she does a great job of showing how oblivious Matilda is
to the results of her constant dancing. The text is easy to read aloud and flows nicely,
but I wanted to see a bit more from the story - it's a day in the life of a girl in motion
and it does a good job of showing how obsessive small children are about the things they
love, but that's about it. I also found the "Dance Miss Matilda!" repetitions went on
a bit long. It was a very enjoyable first read, but I'm not sure it would become a "read
this every night until we memorize it" book. |
