Dinos in the Snow
by Karma Wilson
Illustrated by Laura Rader
We are huge Karma Wilson fans at my house. We have all the Bear books and we loved Hilda
Must Be Dancing - so my 6-year-old snuggled up beside me, ready to be dazzled by Dinos
in the Snow. It's certainly a rollicking book as the dinosaurs ride snowmobiles and
sleds, make snowmen and cocoa. If it can be done on a snowy day - these dinosaurs do it
with enthusiasm. And yet - the text lacks some of the polish and song of the Bear books
or Hilda. Also, the "day in the life" episodic structure didn't have the tension of some
of Wilson's more traditionally plotted picture books. Still, the dinosaurs are definitely
having fun and it would be hard not to have fun along with them. The illustrations by
Laura Rader compliment the text nicely with lots of action and plenty of small sight gags.
Plus the dinosaurs have enough human companionship in the pictures to make readers imagine
how much fun it would be to share a snowy day with dinos. For parents of small boys especially
-- these rambunctious dinosaurs are likely to be a big hit. |
