Dustin Grubbs: One Man Show
by John J. Bonk
It's rare for a book to make me laugh
out loud - sometimes I wonder if I'm humor impaired. I enjoy a funny
book, but a wry smile is usually the best I do. Well, Dustin Grubbs:
One Man Show made me laugh out loud. Dustin Grubbs is a boy with
a single-minded dream of stardom. Dustin isn't always likable, but
he's always understandable - so we're quick to forgive him for some
of his more self-centered moments - and he does have a lot to cope
with. One of his biggest challenges is his dad who left the world's
weirdest family three years ago to become a stand-up comic and never
looked back (or did he?). Because of his dad's actions, Dustin is
sure his mother won't approve of his own acting goals. When Dustin
sees the opportunity for his first big break as the star in a school
play, more things get broken than he bargained for. In the ensuing
chaos, Dustin learns a lot about friendship and family and even stardom.
And he does it through some of the funniest prose since Gordon Korman's
No More Dead Dogs. I don't want to spoil the best joke in the
book, but let me put it this way - if you don't laugh during Granny's
birthday party, you're made of sterner stuff than I am. For readers
who like a good laugh and a snappy plot, I heartily recommend Dustin
Grubbs: One Man Show. |
