Ellen Tebbits

by Beverly Cleary

Ellen Tebbits was one of Cleary's early books but it has all the charm and insight into children that Cleary has shown throughout her career. Ellen has a terrible secret - the worst kind in the world - an underwear secret. And she has no best friend to help her through the embarrassment of this secret - none until she discovers the new girl Austine harbors the exact same secret. This begins the perfect friendship - sometimes great, sometimes rocky, always real. The story is read aloud by Tony winner Andrea Martin. Ms. Martin does hysterically nasal voices for the catty girls Ellen must deal with at her dance class and handles the text with charm throughout. With the frequent road trips of summer, this audio book would be a great summer travel companion for the whole family.
