The Ghost of Shady Lane
by Dotti Endele
As a voracious reading kid, there were two things that I loved to find in a book: a good
mystery series and a good ghost story. The Ghost of Shady Lane combines both of those,
making this my favorite in the Fortune Tellers Club series. The book opens when Anne chooses
a local haunted house for her landmarks report for Social Studies. The Boogerman House
has a historical marker and plenty of mysterious tales. But when Anne's photos of the house
show a ghostly face in the attic window, Anne becomes obsessed with solving the mystery
of that face. Will she find a real ghost or merely a vagrant looking for a place to sleep?
There are plenty of surprises in this fast-paced book, right up to the last pages. I
especially enjoyed the quirky mix of new characters in this book - in fact, the overall
characterization here is very good. I especially liked that all three girls showed very
normal reactions to haunted happenings - a nice mixture of fascination and total freak-out.
Sometimes kids in mysteries seem just a fuzz too brave, but the girls read very true here.
Overall, a very enjoyable read for girls eight and up (younger kids may find the story
a little too scary.) |
