The Green Dog
by Suzanne Fisher Staples
The Green Dog displays the Newbery Honor author's beautiful writing and evocative
imagery to great effect. This "mostly true story" is about the summer after Suzanne's
fourth grade year, when the author wanted a dog more than anything else in the world.
She didn't want just any dog - she wanted a dog named "Jeff." She knew how he would look
and exactly what they would do together. She even had a plan to get Jeff despite her brother's
life-threatening allergies to fur. Because this is a mostly true story, her parents responded
to this Jeff dream exactly as you would expect: they told her, "No," and then insisted
she stop moping. Despite the cartoonish cover featuring a parade of dogs in clothes, this
is not really a funny book. It's a book filled with suspense. When Suzanne's dream dog
finally arrives we fret right along with Suzanne - how long will Jeff get to stay? For
any kid longing for a dog and a friend, the ending is a serious tearjerker rolling all
the unfairness of childhood into one big ball. We feel for Suzanne because we are Suzanne
(or we've been her, at one time.) |
