Jump Up!
by Dan Zanes
Illustrated by Donald Saaf
Dan Zanes, former rocker turned folk artist, was inspired by a "raucous Trinidadian dance"
called a "jump up" - Zanes says he noticed how much people at his shows love to dance
and that contributed to the book as well. In fact, Zanes says rather a lot about a lot
of things in all the many notes and explanations in the book. My five year old politely
asked me to just skip all the "talking parts" and read the story - so I did. But for adults,
the "talk parts" are an interesting glimpse into the song writing process.
The lyrics are matched with bright, child-like paintings. Each right-hand page includes
fold-overs forming flaps usually showing quiet activities turning to lively dancing as
the page unfolds. Illustrator Donald Saaf treats us to dancing toast, frogs on trapezes,
and dancing rainbows in flowered skirts - definitely different.
The book includes a handful of other song lyrics and a CD so your family can have its
own dance party after story time. And Illustrator Donald Saaf also plays tenor banjo,
the banjolin, and sings on the CD. Jump Up! |
