Mickey McGuffin's Ear

by John Hall

We have all heard others tell us something and have too soon forgotten what they said. How does that happen? Do our ears spring a leak?

In Mickey McGuffin's Ear, readers accompany Mickey on a fantastical journey inside his own head. Imagine trap doors, pipes, and teeny, tiny people working 'round the clock to make sure all the messages we receive end up in just the right spot. How does it all work? What's the "Double B Bunch"? Does anyone ever mess up? You have to read the book to find out.

John Hall's voice is a wonderful blend of Magic School Bus and Dr. Seuss. Though not a reliable resource for facts-in the galley, I found a few minor discrepancies and the author and/or illustrator fail to name the bones of the ear-this book is an entertaining and imaginative read. Unique illustrations by Stephen Gilpin spring from the pages and make Mickey McGuffin's Ear a visual delight.

When it's time for a study break, enjoy Mickey McGuffin's Ear with your children; it might just ignite their imaginations and inspire closer listening.
