Only You Can Save Mankind
by Terry Pratchett
Johnny Maxwell is a gamer...sort of. His friend, known as "Wobbly" because of his randomly
moving wobbly bits, is a master game cracker and gives all of his friends copies of the
latest games to play for themselves as soon as he's hacked in and changed all the restrictions
on them. One of these games is called "Only You Can Save the Universe". It seemed like
any other game Wobbly had given the guys, but when Johnny gets a message from an enemy
ship full of giant Newt-like aliens from inside the game, his whole world begins to change
drastically. How can he save the Newts from being destroyed by the other players when
he himself isn't even IN the game?!...or is he?
I LOVE TERRY PRATCHETT! I'm a huge fan and when I found out he had written a children's
sci-fi book, I nearly lost it. All of my friends are "gamers" who spend hours upon hours
playing other people online in their favorite fantasy, military, or fighting games. I
happened to read it when I was visiting two of the biggest "gamers" I know and ended up
having to fight to keep my grips on it. It's an incredible read about a bunch of strange,
unusually "normal" kids who find out that gaming is a lot more than it's cracked up to be.
I love the conversations between Johnny and his pal Kirsty. Their interaction with each
other made me laugh so hard that I could hardly see the page at times because it's so
similar to the people I know. Pratchett has done a FANTASTIC job with this one. I can't
wait for the next one to come out! |
