Reading Makes You Feel Good
by Todd Parr
When my five year old saw a Todd Parr book emerging from my review pile, she nearly danced
and sang. She loves Parr's bright colors, simple drawings, and the seemingly ever-present
pair of spotted underwear you'll find inside somewhere. In all those things, Reading
Makes You Feel Good delivers, plus it had the added benefit of being about her favorite
subject -- reading. Now, a book on the benefits of reading tends to be didactic by definition
but Parr actually revels in his commandments (Eat vegetables! Drink Milk! Curl up with
someone special and read a book!), until you completely forgive him just because of his
whimsical audacity. Parr certainly makes a good case for the fun and value of reading -
reading everywhere - reading books, reading signs, reading maps, chalkboards, posters,
and more. It's a great message and some nice giggle moments, too. Oh, and if you're looking
for the underwear - it's stored in the freezer alongside the peas and tater pals, right
where it belongs. |
