Wait! No Paint
by Bruce Whatley
Illustrated by Bruce Whatley
What begins as a somewhat unique but fairly traditional telling of the Three Little Pigs
quickly takes a turn to the delightfully silly. The book begins by establishing the expected
trappings of the pig tale with their straw, stick, and brick homes - then surprises the
reader with an unexpected "character." This book had my five year old giggling early and
often. It seems the illustrator is having a bit of trouble - spilling juice, running out
of paint, not hearing the pigs' requests quite right. The problems grow more and more
extreme - and amusing until the laugh out loud ending. My daughter has recently developed
a fascination with illustrators so she found the book especially enjoyable. She loved
the idea of an illustrator trying to work around a problem with the paint. My favorite
part of the book was Whatley's depiction of the somewhat fretful piggies - their wonderful
expressions will keep the book fresh long after the funny "punchline" becomes an old
(though favorite) joke. It's short enough to fit into even the most day-weary bedtime
reading - I highly recommend it. |
