Adele & Simon
by Barbara McClintock
Adele meets her little brother, Simon, after school to walk him home. Knowing that Simon has trouble keeping track
of his possessions, Adele admonishes him please to not lose anything on the way home. However, Simon has his own way
of going, and somehow things just seem to get lost along the way. Each time they stop for a moment, something gets left
behind. First is the drawing of a cat that comes up missing when they stop to talk to Madame Biscuit, the grocer.
Finally, by the time they arrive at home, his hat, gloves, scarf and sweater, his coat, knapsack, books and crayons
are gone, too. Adele is so upset!
The end pages of this fascinating book are a map of Paris showing Adele and Simon's route home that is from a 1907
edition of Paris and Environs by Karl Baedeker. The back end page shows the spot where Simon loses each item.
The watercolor and pen-and-ink illustrations throughout the book show recognizable Parisian landmarks...there is the
Louvre and Notre-Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and the Natural History Museum. Each stop is based on a real place. I can
see how a little boy could lose his hat and gloves with so many wonderful distractions. The author's notes at the
end of the book let you know just where McClintock got her inspiration for each scene.
Family fun time just got better...join in to search these intricate illustrations to find Simon's lost articles,
an exciting game you can play with the kids over and over. |
