Christmas Turtles
by Sara Ann Denson
Illustrated by Tara McMillen
Christmas Turtles follows Grandma as she gathers pecans as they fall from the tree throughout the early
autumn, storing them in the wooden crate on her front porch. When the family gathers to help Grandpa plant the
winter wheat, Grandma brings out the magic Christmas tin, and the children help her to crack pecans and pick out
the perfect halves to fill the tin to the halfway mark. At Christmas, the kids find that the pecans have magically
been transformed into chocolate covered Christmas Turtles, each wrapped in pink plastic. How wonderful they are
to eat!
This heartwarming story tells of the sacrifices and love required for Grandma to make these delicious turtles
for the children every year. How her back aches as she gathers the pecans and stands over the stove to cook the
caramel; how it hurts her arthritic hands to crack the nuts. The kids learn that Grandma can't even eat the
goodies!
Tara McMillen provides the expressive illustrations that add visual excitement to the story. You can make this
tradition your own with the exciting recipe in the back of the book...with the whole family joining in the fun. |
