The Ghost of Cutler Creek
Allie Nichols Mysteries
by Cynthia DeFelice
This is the third book that Cynthia DeFelice has used her young heroine Allie Nichols. Now Allie is ending sixth
grade and is looking forward to a long summer vacation. Mr. Henry, her teacher, leaves town to help a fellow
teacher and asks Allie to dog sit Hoover and also to be kind and visit a new student, L. J. L. J. enrolls in
school two days before school ends and his attitude does not endear him to Allie or her best friend Dub. Dub’s
nickname for Allie is "ghost magnet." He reminds her of this when she keeps hearing a whining noise. However,
the whining persists and she discovers that she is hearing the voice of a deceased dog, Belle. Then Hoover
disappears, Allie begins the search to find him and the plot thickens. The suspense builds as Allie and Dub
uncover Belle’s secret and her connection to L. J.
Cynthia DeFelice has created a memorable character in Allie. Allie is resourceful and a compassionate
protagonist. She uses her deductive reasoning to discover Belle’s secret, but also takes chances at the end that
makes for an unconventional climax. The most unusual character of this story is L. J. DeFelice introduces him
as a surly uncaring individual, but develops his character into a surprising ally for Allie.
This is a good book to introduce students to the conventions of a mystery and building the story from the
inception to the climax and conclusion. The descriptions are good and solid and lend themselves to use as a
teaching tool. The best part of this book for me was the development of the major characters. Although L. J.
is pivotal as an unknown, DeFelice brings him to life, makes him human and draws you into his life. This book
does not leave you hanging, but it does mention DeFelice’s other mysteries starring Allie. If your child does
not have much experience in reading mysteries, this is a good one to start with or perhaps The Ghost of Fossil
Glen, the first book in the series or The Ghost and Mrs. Hobbs, the second. |
