Golden Wings
The Green Heart Series, No 5
by Marlies Bugmann
When I first picked up Golden Wings, by Marlies Bugmann, and noticed that it was fifth in her Green Heart
Series about wildlife in Tazmania, I assumed that the book would be similar to a children’s version of Born Free.
In other words, I thought that it would be more non-fiction than fiction. Was I ever wrong!
Though Bugmann features a unique animal or bird in each book and does give specific information about the
creature’s habitat, diet, and behavior, the animal is only part of the story. Readers follow Geoffrey and his
mother, who have moved to Tazmania, and their new friends Alfred, the young handyman, and his daughter, Rebecca.
In each book, readers get a feel of the landscape of Tazmania through Geoffrey’s eyes. They also see what mischief
this little boy can get in to.
In Golden Wings, not only is Geoffrey and his family dealing with an injured wedge-tailed eagle and the
circumstances in which it was shot, but they are experiencing the blending of two families as Alfred and Geoffrey’s
mother get married. We read about the modest wedding preparations in New Zealand, where Geoffrey’s grandparents live,
and Geoffrey and Rebecca’s adventures at a bird sanctuary there.
The book is a delightful look into life in the countryside of Tazmania The characters are interesting and face
some different challenges than children in this country. It’s a very pleasant read. |
