Hattie, Get a Haircut!
by Jenna Glatzer
Illustrated by Monica Kendall
If you've ever taken a child to get his or her hair cut for the first time, you'll love
Jenna Glatzer's first picture book, Hattie, Get a Haircut! It is a delightful story
of young, stubborn Hattie who doesn't want to go to the beauty salon. When she has a funny
nightmare where her hair grows like the spaghetti in the Magic Pasta Pot, getting tangled
around her feet and fence posts, and eventually has animals making their homes in it, she
changes her mind. Told in verse, this amusing story is a great show-and-tell for any youngster
not wanting to go under the beautician's scissors.
Monica Kendall's funny watercolor illustrations will keep kids giggling and wanting
the story read over and over. The two-page picture of Hattie's hair growing all over her
neighborhood is an absolute hoot!
An added bonus to this little story is what Hattie does with her beautiful hair after
her visit to the salon. She mails her hair to an organization that makes wigs for children
who have lost their hair through disease or chemotherapy. It is a touching selfless act
that adds depth to the story. (A footnote for adults about these organizations would have
been a nice touch at the end of the story.)
Better known for her books on writing and the new Celine Dion biography, Celine Dion:
For Keeps, Glatzer has found a new niche for her writing talents. It is hoped that
she will offer more children's books as delightful as this one for us in the future. |
